OPW

2019

‘OPW’ is the debut album by musician and composer Oliver Patrice Weder, set for release on SA Recordings on 1st November 2019.

'OPW' is in turn influenced by the meditative sounds of Ali Farka Touré, the quirkiness and levity of Chilly Gonzales' solo piano work and the eccentric production on Devendra Banhart's 'Ape in Pink Marble' album. Though the album is melancholic in its context, rich arrangements of instruments - piano, Wurlitzer, cello, flugelhorn and drum machines through to spoon solos, occasional gritty synths and percussion bought in the Favelas in Rio de Janeiro - bring flavour and colour throughout, with players from the LCO adding experimental and contemporary string accompaniment.

"OPW is a collection of tracks from my personal adventures and experiences during the years of 2017 and 2018. The writing and sound palette have been heavily inspired by living and travelling through different places and cultures such as Brazil, East Africa, Spain, USA, Holland and England. It has been my dream for a long time to create something like this and put it into musical notes, but only now have I felt ready to take on the challenge. The sound of the album is intimate yet diverse. You can hear the work and process the music has gone through whilst creating it. With this album I hand over my very personal diary and I’d love for you to listen to it whilst on a beautiful journey yourself.”

- Oliver Patrice Weder

Inspired by a trip from Rio de Janeiro to Valencia through countless other cities, OPW sounds itself like a journey rich in culture, varied of scene and laden with appreciation. It is emotional and thoughtful, yet colourful and celebratory. The first track may lead you into labeling it a ‘piano album’, but there is much encroaching on the stage, deservedly stealing audience eyes from the grand instrument under the spotlight.

That Weder manages to smoothly juxtapose such pieces with the jazzy EDM of “A Stone’s Throw”, whose plucked double bass line yanks under the spotlight the type of infectious groove that stays in the shadows elsewhere in the set, is to his credit. It underscores that, despite OPW’s overarching wistful air, it is a brisk and hopeful set that bounces from one idea to the next with a finesse unusual in debut releases. I eagerly await Weder’s next journey.
